The story of the Sun and the Moon.

SO once there was this boy who came up with the thought that the Moon and the Sun were, excuse his imagination, a couple.

Two circles in the sky: one striking, the other beautiful. Both with the same purpose: to light up the sky. What else could be asked for out of a matching couple?

So this boy thought the Sun and the Moon were meant for each other.

But he also thought it was strange that the Sun and the Moon were never really together. One only appears in the day, the other at night. Not a really healthy habit for a couple, he thought.

Yeah, sometimes, the Moon can be seen just when the Sun was just leaving. And also the Sun when the Moon was just going. Which saddens the boy so much.

The boy has got a good heart, though. He even tried to find ways to bring the Sun and the Moon together. Some evenings he went up the hill behind his house and shouted to the Sun to stay just a little while, stay for the Moon, she is just coming up, soon, just wait a bit more.

But of course, no. The Sun went. And then only the Moon appeared, shining its soft light. And then the boy would sometimes wait for the whole night, all the way until dawn, and then scream for the Moon to wait for the Sun, but the Moon just fades away..

SO the boy felt so sad for the Sun and the Moon. Sad enough that when his favorite grandfather came to visit, he did not greet him nor welcomed him. He just sits down on the steps leading down the basement, too caught up with the Sun and the Moon's relationship problem.

SO this Grandfather was surprised at the absence of his favorite grandson upon his arrival. Thinking that there must be something up with his grandson, Grandfather went around the house to look for the boy. When he finally found his grandson sitting on the basement steps, immediately he asked him what was wrong.

SO the boy told his favorite grandfather of the Sun and the Moon. How the two seem to be perfect for each other, but not perfect with each other. How he wish there was something he could do about it.

Now this Grandfather is the kind of Grandfather every child wish they had. He knew the way children's mind work, and he knew how seriously his grandson considered this problem. So of course he tried to think of a way to convince the boy that this is the way it has to be.

SO he told his grandson that the Sun and the Moon have a job to do. The Sun has to light up the day, and the Moon light up the night. And when their turns end, they go to rest themselves in preparation for the following day or night, while the other takes over. So Grandfather explained that the two had no choice. They have responsibilities. They couldnt afford to be selfish and make the world suffer because of their selfishness. If the Sun stays back for the Moon, then the following day there would be no light; and vice versa for the Moon.

The boy thought this over. And then he asked his grandfather

Then what is the point of being together? (here he is already convinced that they absolutely are together in the first place)  What is the point if they can't be together, and that they have responsibilities? What is the point of their existence, if they can't choose to be with each other, or to have their own way, instead of always have to serve the world?

Then the grandfather smiled sadly at his grandson.

Did you know, few times a year, the Moon will be too overcomed with sadness, and not do her job for one night? Did you know, few times a year, the Sun and the Moon will get together just for a few minutes, just to be with each other because they couldnt bear it anymore? And then the whole world didn't mind, because the sight is beautiful just for a few minutes, the sight of watching love reunited for a brief moment out of a long, long time.

But that is what they have to do. Meet up only once a year, or disappear to overcome the emotions. This is what they have to do, so that the whole world can be happy. And maybe that is real love. Maybe real love is about willing to sacrifice for others and what you can do for them and giving up your own needs. Or maybe real love is about having the strength to be apart from each other but still love each other so deeply, so truly.

And maybe that is the love between the Sun and the Moon.
